Two specs decide how a coin feels in the hand: its diameter and its thickness. Get them right and the coin feels substantial and important; get them wrong and even a beautiful design feels cheap or unwieldy.
Here’s how to choose both.
Size it to the use
Challenge coins usually run 1.5″ to 2″ across. 1.75″ and 2″ are the most-ordered — big enough for detail and a solid hand-feel without being bulky. Go to 2.5″–3″ for premium awards, presentation pieces, and detailed 3D designs where presence matters more than pocketability.
Thickness is where weight comes from
Standard coins are about 3mm thick; stepping up to 4mm or 5mm adds real heft and lets deeper relief show. That weight is a huge part of the perceived quality — a thick, heavy coin simply feels more valuable — so for milestone and leadership recognition, err toward thicker.
Leave the design room to breathe
The most common design mistake is cramming too much text and detail onto a small coin. A clean central emblem, a readable border, and a little negative space always look more premium and strike more cleanly than a crowded face — pick a size that gives your key artwork room.
